The inversion method or also called mulholland method for natural hair is not something that most have heard about on a daily basis. As naturals, we are always trying to find new ways to make our kinks drop a little faster.
Long hair don’t care is not just a saying for naturals, it’s a way of life. We have all heard of using castor oil, protective hair styles, and even coconut oil to promote hair growth. But few are familiar with a so-called inversion method for natural hair.
What is the inversion method / mulholland method?
The inversion method on natural hair seems to be the answer to every curly headed girl’s dreams. In fact, the inversion method is the answer to everyone’s dream that has ever wanted long hair.
We all know the struggle of trying to grow our hair out, and it seems like no matter what we do, it takes just south of forever to make it get even an inch long. The inversion method makes the wait a lot shorter.
In fact, some women claim that the method makes their hair grow an inch per week! Mostly, the inversion method for natural hair involves inverting or putting the tips of your hair upside down while you are massaging your scalp with oil. This can also be used in combination with the loc method.
Benefits
Recall that stimulating the hair follicles can cause for your hair to grow. Hence, why many naturals make it a habit of massaging their scalps every night before bed. The beauty of the inversion method is that it stimulates the hair follicles in two ways.
One is the traditional movement that you get from the massage, and the other is from gravity making blood rush to your head. Due to the inversion method this is said to stimulate growth.
Side Effects
Since the inversion method involves being in an uncomfortable position for an extended period of time, there are certain side effects and risks that you should be aware of before attempting the inversion method. For one, many women experience feelings of dizziness and nausea as a result of holding their head upside down for several minutes at once.
If you experience any feelings of dizziness or being light headed during performing the inversion method, then do not try to tough it out or suck it up. This is your body’s way of telling you that you need to abort the mission and lift your head up.
If this is your first time using the inversion method, then you should not be trying to get into the full-blown 90-degree position.
How to Use the Mulholland Method to Grow Your Hair
The inversion method / mulholland method is a seven-day process that requires you to hold your head upside down for a few minutes while massaging oil into your scalp. Please see the directions below as to the preferred steps to start your journey.
- First, begin by warming up your favorite oil.
- Make sure that it is a natural oil.
- See the sections below for a list of the best oils to use for the inversion method on natural hair.
- Do not attempt to microwave your oil.
- Putting oil directly into the microwave can kill some of the healthy nutrients that you want to keep your hair.
- Instead, put the oil in an applicator bottle (only a dollar or two at your local beauty supply store), then place the applicator bottle into a warm batch of water. Squirt a little oil on your hand to make sure it’s not too hot!
- Proceed to give yourself a hot oil treatment by massaging the oil into your scalp.
After a minute, slowly make your way into an inverted position.
Alternative directions
If you are struggling with the regular inversion method, there are a few different ways to go about this. So, choose which one is the most comfortable for you.
- Hold your head over the sink (face forward) as if you’re about to rinse out your hair
- Sit in a chair and lean your head forward like you’re about to paint your toes
- Standing up with a soft knee, bend your head forward into a 45-degree angle
We recommend using a 45-degree angle to start with regardless of the position that you choose. As you get used to holding it for four minutes, you can slowly start to make your way into the 90-degree angle that the inversion method calls for.
Aftercare
Again, do the inversion method every night for seven days straight. Try not to skip any days if possible.
If you find that your hair is way too oily by day three of four, then feel free to co-wash your hair with conditioner. Do not use shampoo because it could cause you to dry your hair out and completely negate any progress that you’ve had so far.
There you have it! The inversion method is as simple as that.
Once the week is up, feel free to shampoo and conditioner hair per usual.
How often should you do it?
Because you are literally causing blood to rush to the top of your head, it is not wise to make the inversion method a long- term habit. In fact, it is highly recommended that you only perform the inversion method for a maximum of 7 days at a time and only once a month.
Do not try to the inversion method for natural hair more than once every three weeks. If you do, then there is a chance that your body will adapt to the blood flow going to your head and then you will not get good results.
You know how people say too much of a good thing can be bad for you? Well, this definitely holds true for the inversion method for natural hair.
Again, make sure you limit performing the mulholland method only once every 4-6 weeks.
When is the best time to do it?
You can do the inversion method for natural hair at any time; however, women should be cautious if they are going to certain events. For example, it is recommended not to do the inversion method when you are menstruating since the bod is already in flux.
Also, pregnant women should talk to their doctor before inverting to make sure that the possible adverse side effects of the inversion method won’t harm them or their baby.
How much oil to use?
Because you’re going to be putting oil on your scalp every day for seven days straight, you do not want to overdo it. You only need enough to put on your scalp, and not your actual hair.
If you use an applicator bottle during your use of the inversion method, you should not have to worry about overdoing. However, if you think you may be a bit heavy handed, then just put an ounce of oil into your applicator, and don’t refill it for the whole week.
Hopefully, if you see how little you have, then you’ll use it more sparingly.
Ingredients
The only things you’ll need to complete the inversion method is your favorite natural oil. You also need a decent conditioner in case your hair gets too oily.
Some best inversion method oil that people find the best results with are Jamaican castor oil, coconut oil, argan oil, and sunflower oil. While some people opt for extra virgin olive oil and sweet almond oil.
Only natural oils are recommended.
Inversion Method without oil
Using oil is optional. Therefore you can do all the inversion method steps you did before, just skip the adding of the oil in the beginning. Make sure that you massage your scalp while you’re in the inverted position!
Relaxed Hair
The inversion method can be done on any hair type. In fact, you do the same thing for relaxed hair that you would for curly hair. Since the strands may be a bit more vulnerable since the hair is relaxed, then you may want to lose a little less oil than someone with 4c black hair.
If your hair gets too oily, it will start to weigh your relaxed hair down quicker. Keep your conditioner on standby during using the inversion method just in case you need to co-wash a couple of times.
Hair with Braids
Just like you can do the inversion method any other way, you can certainly do it while you have box braids or any other type of protective style you are rocking. If you have a style that does not allow you to have contact with your scalp, then do not attempt to do the inversion method.
The inversion method for natural hair only works well when you are both inverted and massaging your scalp. African American hair is beautiful, and the inversion method for natural hair is something that can be used to enhance that beauty.
Remember, that the mulholland method is best for hair length and not for thickness. However, keep reading other articles to see more ways to keep that natural hair looking fabulous.
