What Does the Mayonnaise Hair Treatment Do?
The mayonnaise treatment may become one of your favorites even though it’s not exactly aromatic. The mayonnaise treatment makes hair shinier and more moisturized for anyone who dares to put it on their hair. It can also be used in combination with the loc method.
The mayonnaise hair treatment softens and conditions the hair very quickly and economically. It’s an inexpensive and effective way to get your hair to shine and help with hair growth. See more benefits below.
Does the Mayo Hair Treatment Work?
A resounding yes! The deep conditioning mayonnaise hair treatment can be used to soften your curls and clump them into a defined curl pattern.
Most naturals rave about the treatment’s ability to define curls and add shine for any hair type such as 4a hair, 4b hair and even 4c natural hair.
Benefits of a Mayonnaise Hair Mask for Natural Hair
There are many reasons why your hair will benefit from the mayonnaise hair treatment. Here are five amazing benefits:
- Economical. The mayonnaise treatment will quickly become one of your favorite masks because it is so inexpensive. You won’t have to skimp on product, and it’s a great solution when you’re at the end of your budget. Want even more value? Buy the Costco-sized jar and get a low budget shower cap.
- Easy to Find. There’s no need to make special trips to the beauty supply for a pricey jar of deep conditioner. Finding mayonnaise is easy because it’s in every grocery store. Ran out of conditioner for deep conditioning? Use up the last of the mayo from your refrigerator. Be careful though, the best mayo for hair is the one that contains few chemicals.
- Adds Shine. The unique ability to add shine is one of the best benefits of doing this treatment regularly. If you have dull or dry hair, you’ll want to give deep conditioning with mayo a try. It’s been known to give natural hair more luster.
- Protects the Hair. Mayonnaise contains a ton of oil, and it can be used to coat the hair effectively. Soaking your hair in this rich condiment will protect your strands from UV rays, cold temperatures, and friction. It also helps with hair growth.
- Lubricates the Strands. Friction is one of the worst enemies of curly hair. It can come from pillowcases, shirt collars, hair ties, and even from the curls themselves. Mayo will lube your curls to lessen friction. You’ll find that your curls glide apart easier and break less.
How to Prepare Mayonnaise
You’re going to love making this deep conditioning mayo hair mask for your hair because it’s super easy. Wondering which mayo to buy? Choose a product that doesn’t contain a lot of additives.
Try to avoid the mayonnaise that has a long list on the label. You’re mainly looking for oil (olive oil or coconut oil works well), vinegar, eggs or egg yolks, and one or two preservatives like lemon juice.
Trader Joes makes a fantastic basic mayonnaise, or you can also try looking for one at your local health food store. However, if finding these healthy ones gets too complicated, don’t worry. The conventional Best Foods or Hellman’s will work just fine.
Procedure
The mayonnaise hair treatment instructions are straight-forward and not complicated to follow. You’re probably wondering whether your hair should be wet or dry when you apply the mayonnaise. Mayonnaise does not contain water, so you’ll want to dampen your hair with a water spray bottle first.
Your hair doesn’t need to be soaking wet, but it’s good to hydrate the hair before applying oils like olive oil. After you hydrate, the mayonnaise will do an excellent job of sealing in moisture.
How long should you leave the mayo on your hair? Thirty minutes is enough for deep conditioning under a shower cap, but you can leave it on for more time or even overnight.
How often should you do the mayo hair treatment? If your hair is very dry and damaged, you may benefit from doing the mayonnaise hair treatment once a week.
Try These Egg and Mayonnaise Hair Masks
Egg and mayonnaise make an excellent treatment for dry and damaged hair. Egg yolks contain biotin, lutein, other B vitamins, and minerals–all of which benefit hair.
You can even try applying this mixture on your scalp for hair growth. Mayo already contains a small amount of egg yolks, but mixing additional eggs will be nutritious for your hair.
Are you curious about whether egg works as a protein treatment? The mayonnaise hair treatment is probably not the most effective treatment if you’re looking for protein. Egg molecules are not small enough to fit through the shaft.
Hydrolyzed protein and regular coconut milk are two of the best proteins because they can penetrate and repair the shaft.
Try doing a milk and mayo hair treatment for protein. You’ll find that both cow’s milk and coconut milk are effective for damaged and color-treated hair.

Ingredients:
1 cup Mayonnaise
1 Tbsp. Honey
1-2 Eggs
Instructions:
- Blend all three ingredients in a small bowl.
- Dampen your hair with a water spray bottle.

It works. I have 4b dense, coarse, thick and fine hair. I tried the egg, mayonnaise, honey + olive oil and my hair is very soft to touch now. It feels coarse but not rough. I shed fewer strands and breakage is non existent.

I’m a white woman with wavy ash blonde hair that has been taking a beating from a cold Canadian winter. The static effect was overwhelming! Well, thank you for the mayonnaise treatment! Light mayo for 30 min as prescribed and my hair is SO soft, silky, and not static-y that my little boys were fighting over who got to sit beside mommy and touch her hair. ???? Thank you.

Now I have different ideas on how to use mayonnaise for my hair.
I want to ask if I can add Mayonnaise to my Shea butter for my daily hair cream. Thanks
Patrina says
No, it’s best to use mayo as a protein treatment that is washed out.
Peace says
I have high porosity 4c natural hair and recently av had protein overload. My hair feels so dry, strong and breaks and now am trying to find better ways to restore my hair. Pls will these mayonnaise treatment really moisture/deep condition my hair as I want to combat d dryness
I actually learnt that protein is good for high porosity hair but I think I overdid it. Pls help…. Thanks
Patrina says
Mayo treatment is like a protein treatment. If you have experienced protein overload then you will need to make sure all hair care products do not contain protein. It will take time for your hair to recover.
BARBARA HICKMAN says
how do i find out my hair porosity? i am attempting to let my hair grow, but it is so thick and dry!
I need to know what hair products to combat the dryness and the breakage!
Please advise
Patrina says
You would place a few clean strands of hair in lukewarm water and let it sit for about 5 mins. If it floats you have low porosity and if it sinks you have high porosity hair.

Hi, I’m on a competitive swim team so I am in chlorine filled water all the time. Last season I had to chop 5 inches of my hair despite wearing a swim cap. Tears were shed How can I maintain my hair even though I’m a swimmer?
Patrina says
Hi Cassie, I’m sorry to hear this. Does your hair still get wet with the swim cap on? If so, you will need to add conditioner and an oil to your hair before you get in the water. This will protect your hair a bit but there isn’t a way to truly safeguard your hair as the chlorine is very strong. After your swim you should wash your hair with a moisturizing conditioner and if you can deep condition your hair. If you are at school then you should rinse and or wash your hair as soon as you get out of the pool and apply a moisturizing deep conditioner and rinse it out when you are home.
Kalin says
Hello, I was wondering when you come up with the recipes… how long do they last before they expire? Or what could you do from keeping it from going bad?!
Patrina says
Hi Kalin, if you place them in the fridge they can last up to 10 days. After that, I would discard them.
Devon Dunham says
I’m really gray and dye my hair a lot. I use a light ash brown. I do not light red. If I rinse with vinegar it gets red. My hair is really damaged from dying so much. What is the best conditioner? Will mayonnaise make it red?
Patrina says
Hello Devon, I think it would be best to incorporate a deep conditioner as well as a moisturizing conditioner. Please check out this article where I list the best (in my opinion) deep conditioners https://www.naturalhairqueen.net/best-deep-conditioner-for-natural-hair/

Hello today I used a relaxer on my hair for the first time. Now my hair feels like I have hairspray dried in my hair. Feels really bad. What is the best thing I can use to get my hair feeling soft and smooth again. I used pantene shampoo and conditioner afterwards but I’m really disappointed with how my hair has turned out. Can you give me some advice?
